Phoenix: Space is one of three adaptions of Osamu Tezuka’s classic Phoenix manga produced by Madhouse, each focusing on a different story arc and featuring a different director. The other two productions, while not without merit, feel uneven compared to this tightly-paced outing by Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D). Having already proved his mettle with the stylish horror Wicked City and the unnerving Burning Man segment of Neo-Tokyo, Kawajiri brings the exact right touch of moodiness and suspense to this haunting sci-fi tale of crime and punishment. Bright hues color the dark scenes that propel this slow-burn mystery, which invites the audience to mull over the concept of intergalactic karma.
